I couldn’t get through it. Too hard to follow with that dictation and no coffee. :/

Counterpoint to all the haters: if you grew up in the 70s/80s, you’re used to hearing this kind of diction, because this style of diction was VERY common among local TV and radio news anchors of those times...a kind of poor-man’s attempt to speak like Walter Cronkite or Peter Jennings, who were probably the single best examples of non-regional diction (i.e. news-room accent) in the US media from 1960-2000. Today, people who know they are getting into journalism early in life (high school) start working on non-regional diction years, maybe even decades before they become an anchor, so that by the time they reach the desk, you would never tell that their hometown was Savannah, or Milwaukee, or Camden...but in the “old days,” local talent was not so well prepared, and often times, they would try to hide their regional accents by doing exactly what Mr. Regular is doing here (tensed jaw, minimal lip movement), which in itself kind of became it’s own version of non-regional diction. His fast-rate of speech leans more towards the side of radio news anchor (yes, all you whippersnappers, we got our news on the RADIO...that didn’t come from a satellite!), and while it’s not a spot-on imitation, I can clearly recognize exactly what he’s trying to do, even if there’s a moment here or there where he’s slightly unintelligible.
TL;DR: WE GET IT ALREADY, YOU’RE YOUNG!

This was a well-written, educational post, thank you. I didn't catch that, it just bugged me. :-)

They also don’t realize that the reason that radio talk shows break at the top of the hour is because that’s when stations would have their FCC mandated news report. That’s why Les Nessman worked at WKRP!

Eh, yes and no. You’re right about the history of speaking for broadcast, but this dude is doing such a piss poor rendition of that voice. It IS hard to listen to, even if you are used to that particular cadence.

Oh, I’m not vouching for the QUALITY of his attempt. Just explaining what the attempt IS for those who didn’t understand what he was attempting.
As a musician who has studied a fair amount of jazz (and having taught some college courses on it), I’ve experienced my fair share of, “I totally get what you’re trying to do...and you’re doing a terrible job of it,” as well as a lot of, “I have no clue what this cat is trying to do.” It’s very frustrating to be on the latter side, which is why I always appreciate it when someone who DOES understand what the attempt is, is willing to clarify it for me.

Nah, he’s trying to be Hunter S. Thompson. Everything about this guy screams “trying to be Hunter S. Thompson”.

Ah. Live and learn; I am not familiar with HST's body of work (journalist or writer or something, yeah?). HST sounds an awful lot many of the poorly enunciated small-town news people I heard growing up. Or, at the very least, Mr.Regular attempting to sound like HST sounds like those news men.

I agree. Hard to listen to. I was shocked it lasted for the whole length of the video. I sure didn’t.
